The fireplace of a good friend who lived down the road. He built his house from rock and timber on the land. I went back to see what had happened to his place years after he had moved and later died before his wife sold the property. A lot of the house had rotted away, exposing the place to the elements.  Of everything, the kitchen fireplace remained.

The Roses

Bren’s Photo For The Week challenge: Roses
I love Roses. They are a great subject to photograph. This first photo is a Climbing Rose in a park in Grafton.rose_climbing_named_grafton_sept 2104

I tried to bring out the softness in this photo.

Birds

Welcome back Bren with a theme for the Photo for the Week Challenge: Birds

Instead of having a bird overload I decided just to play with a photo to make things a bit different than my usual stock standard bird photo.

There is a road we drive along where we take in the scenery and hope there will be something special along the way. One particular drive, around a bend something colourful flashed in front of the car and landed on a barbed wire fence just beside car. It was a couple of Rainbow Bee-eaters. Beautiful little birds.

Trees

The word prompt from Bren: Trees

You would think that living in the forest I would have lots of photos of trees. I have some but nothing as wonderful as Brens trees.

Up close

The word prompt from Bren: Macro

You may have noticed I like to get up close to so many subjects it will be hard to pick a few for Bren’s Photo for the Week challenge.

Leaves

The word prompt from Bren: Leaves

I was looking about as I have taken a few photos of leaves lately, then changed my mind and decided to go with some of my favourite leaves – Begonia leaves. I have quite a number of Begonias in pots. I was first attracted to the leaves many many years ago and then when the Begonias flowered it was a pleasant surprise. No flowers here just a few of the leaves.

Propagating Begonias is easy. I get a leaf, put some cuts into the veins especially near the stem but not cut through, place in seed raising mixture and keep watered. Begonias don’t mind being a bit dry. Too much water the leaf will rot.

Mountain with a past

The Photo for the Week challenge: Mountains

What is a mountain with a past you ask. The mountain I chose for Bren’s photo challenge #17 is that well know mountain with a historical past.
Going back in time to 79AD some people were going about their daily life when the ground rumbled and suddenly an explosion sent ash and hot lava raining down upon the people and  “buried the cities of Pompeii, Oplontis, and Stabiae under ashes and lapilli and the city of Herculaneum under a mudflow.” (https://www.britannica.com/place/Vesuvius) The last eruption was in 1944 and the volcano is still active. Vesuvius is very closely monitored today.

Yes, I chose Mt Vesuvius. This is the view of Vesuvius that people of Pompeii would have seen although before the eruption, the mountainside was forested with Oak and Chestnut trees.

Looking back

The word prompt from Bren at ryanphotography: Sepia

I am going back to the Isle of Brac, Croatia to put a bit of sepia onto a few photos as Brac has a certain old world charm. I hope you enjoy my efforts in applying sepia toning with a couple using vignette as well.
