Fungi (in the garden)

I was bemoaning the fact that even thought it has been quite wet, I hadn’t seen many fungi. For quite a number of weeks it rained most days, with occasional bursts of sunshine that were warm to hot. Did I mention humid. One day it reached 31C, the day before and day after were wet and in the low 20C’s

The first little fungi I found were a small yellow umbrella and some small puff balls among some gravel that I though at first were white stones. Then I noticed someone had taken a few bites out of one

You can tell how small it is by the size of the blades of grass

A couple of days later, on the grass outside the front there were so many of these tiny brown most beautifully textured brown fungi. Blade of grass measuring again 😁

I had to try and get the two little dark fungi growing under the brown ones. Two days later and they are shrivelled white

Hands up who thinks I touched this oozing mass of wood fungus? It actually looks grosser in real life.

The white cap gave this one away among the wet dark mulch

Very hard to get a good photo of this one in the dark location.

I found this growing in a plant pot in the garden. It is quite tiny. I thought it might open up and look similar to the one I saw earlier ⬆️

What a golden colour these one are

The early stages of a wood fungus emerging.

I went away for a day and before I went, spied this fungi growing on a tall stalk

When I came home today, the cap had opened and is nearly 100mm or 4 inches in diameter

Want a closer look?

I had to see what it looked like underneath

So much for not having many fungi about

  1. Loved looking at all your fungi. My hand went up, I bet you touched it. My late husband used to belong to the Vancouver Mycological Society. Our house was always full of spore prints etc. I just found a box full of fungi spores. I plan on putting them out in the garden this spring when we get some moisture and see what happens! You never know…

  2. Man, you’ve got a lot! We get some too, but mine look different. That last picture is spectacular!

P.S. Arrived here via Ju-Lyn. So YOU’RE the “form one planet” sign. I’ve long admired that but never meandered over. :/

  3. The gills beneath the mushroom caps always amazes me – they are perfectly uniform. Just like the white dots on the bigger caps. The wood fungus resembles cauliflower. Years ago I had a couple of Golden Eunonymous bushes – one got a fungus that looked like cauliflower growing on it – the other was perfectly fine. I went to the nursery for a potion for it and was told to cut off the growth, swab it with alcohol every day and see if it repaired itself. It did and I still have the two bushes
