Bird of the Week: LXVI
This week the Crested Pigeon.
I have shown you all of my Dove photos so I thought, let’s do the pigeons. The White-headed Pigeon was a while ago and I only have a few different Pigeons around here, so this foray into Pigeons won’t take many posts.

Crested Pigeons are found almost everywhere in Australia, common in towns and cities

Most of the plumage is grey-brown, becoming more pink on the underparts. The wings are barred with black, and are decorated with glossy green and purple patches. The head is grey, with an pinkish-red ring around the eye.

The rest of the wings are lovely as well.

The Crested Pigeon’s diet consists mostly of native seeds, as well as those of introduced crops and weeds. Some leaves and insects are also eaten.

Feeding can be in small to large groups and also congregate to drink at waterholes. Birds arrive in nearby trees, and often sit for long periods before descending to drink.
Even a Crested Pigeon can have a bad hair day.

What a beautiful crest! He looks like the mourning doves or “rock pigeons” we have here, but ours have no crest

They do look like regular pigeons but have a punk style

That crest is sure unusual – our pigeons pale in comparison. 🙂

Stylish! I wonder if the crest has significance in the mating period.

Probably not as it is hard to distinguish between sexes and it is just some feather thing peculiar to the Crested Pigeon
