CFFC: Sporting Venues
Better start at the beginning with one of the oldest sporting venues, The Colosseum

Pop over to the Arena in Verona and see the new use, an opera.

The passageway where the Lions and Tigers would enter The Arena.

The Gladiators entrance

Sport is something I don’t take many pictures of but I did find a few
Time out for my three daughters and I. Eldest wanted to go to the cricket in Brisbane at the GABA. It was the second last match for one of the best bowlers at the time
The other two went for the adventure. One of their highlights would have been sitting up in bed watching TV, eating pizza
It was a day/night match between England and Australia.
Daytime

At night

Glen McGrath sending one down

A more traditional cricket scene in Grafton. The main noise you hear is quiet chatter among the teams, soft applause from spectators occasionally and the sound of the leather ball meeting a willow wood bat. Of course it gets noisy when someone gets out

One road trip with my mate we went to Brisbane for a concert. We had a night free and my mate follows the rugby fervently. He got us great seats. On the halfway line, in a shared private enclosure, enough for ten people. Easy access to a bar and food service as well.
Let’s kick-off

A battle of strength, power just to gain possession of the ball. There’s a solid thump and grunts when the two packs engage

Something exciting must have happened. I wouldn’t want to be sitting behind it

Games over, time to head home

Many years ago I used to be a flag marshal at the motorcycle racing. It was good fun most of the time, plus a great view points where the public can’t see. I used to take at least a roll of photos.
Some of the sidecar racers would come along and we would always hope they get around the corner but most of them are very skillful

It’s strange to see how they sit on the racing bikes back then compared to now. No knees, shoulders or elbows scraping the ground back then. Speeds were also no where near the 300kms of today

The H was Hurley Wilvert an American who can over to Australia to do a few races. The other is Greg Handsford, one of the better Australian racers.
Wilvert is in all white leathers and bike. Handsford has green leathers and bike fairing

That kick off pic is fabulous. The fire is pretty scary. I could definitely not watch those guys on the racing bikes. So many great sports pics! I don’t think I have any in all my many photos 🙂

Thanks Lisa 😀 The Colosseum was an afterthought. I have no idea why those flares are set off now-a-days at footy games. Motorcycle racing is exhilarating.

Great gallery, Brian! I love how you captured the motion in your photos (on the field and on the motorcycle racing track.) Superb photos of the Verona arena!

Brian, I have saved the fourth photo as it gave me a superb idea for a story. Please let me know that this is ok with you.

I really like that photo too so I am happy it has supplied some inspiration. You are welcome to use it Violet, thanks for asking 😀

The action photos are great, especially that last one of the two bikes. Then again, “sitting up in bed watching TV, eating pizza” sounds pretty good, too.

You got a lot of photos from sports for somebody who doesn’t take many sports’ photos . 😁 I should like the rugby photos best but I’m really liking the Colosseum photos. Shades of Qua vadis …

We were at the opera on Saturday; while excellent, the venue was nothing like the Arena in Verona!

I think to see a show at The Arena would be spectacular Nancy 😀

With your introduction about sports photography, I was not at all expecting to see the Colosseum in the first photo. Those first four photos were a surprise, and yet, of course they are all about sports. As others said, I like the subsequent action shots.

Thank you Crystal 😀 The Arena in Verona has to be the oldest sporting venue still standing possibly. It was built 50 years before the Colosseum

For someone who doesn’t take many sports photos this is a great collection. Love the cricket photos, especially with another Ashes series about to start.
