Debbies Six Word Saturday
Yes, the Australian Pelican. Who would have thought. I didn’t know, perhaps one of the long legged birds, maybe the Brolga.
“They may not be as tall as the emu or the cassowary, but they’re still considered to be one of the heaviest flying birds in the world, weighing up to 13kg.”
Why do Pelicans always like to sit on light poles over bridges?
Because they can I reckon. When they open their mouths so wide, you don’t feel like arguing.

“Often a pelican will crane its neck with it mouth agape, scaring off invaders”

Despite their size, Pelicans are strong graceful fliers.
“every decade or so, some Pelicans leave their coastal sanctuaries for the small, inland lakes of the harsh Aussie outback, which experts argue is for breeding and feeding purposes.”
I don’t know why these “experts” are arguing, of course its’ for breeding and as for feeding, maybe a change from a constant seafood diet.

I reckon they are so lovely and that look always gets you in.

Nearly always gracefully beautiful.

Well, gotta go now. Nice of you to drop by.

Me too. In the UK, the only ones – sort of – living in the wild are in St. James’ Park in London.

I love pelicans — I loved watching them fly in formation over the waves of the Pacific looking for fish on top of the water, I love the white pelican who lives here, seeing them against the sky, flying together. These are beautiful photos!

Thank you Martha. I have only seen a big squadron flying over head a couple of times. There was the occasional Pelican who used to fly up and down the river outside of my office 🙂

I always thought pelicans were warm weather birds until I discovered New England has its own set of NINE pelicans. I spotted them all in Maine last summer. I had NO idea they lived this far north.

I though they like the warm parts as well. They also go where there’s food

Well, apparently there’s fish in Maine. Cormorants and pelicans. And a few Bald Eagles.

Pelicans are cool! I particularly like the one with the black backdrop and the reflection.

They’re such interesting looking birds, don’t you think, especially up close. Excellent shots of them. The ones here are mostly on the water. Maybe they’re just lazy or have nowhere special to go. 🙂

Great photos. That bill must weigh about 20 pounds! They’re weird and comical and yet dignified at the same time.

Thanks Graham. I agree that Pelicans can be rather aloof but do goofy stuff as well
