I realized the other day that I would really like to have a cow. I also saw how impossible that is.

A cow raised from a calf are good to have around. They are like big dogs….well sort of. Don’t tell Bear I said that ๐

She’d love to have a cow. She likes the Herefords that share a fence with the Refuge. My cousins had four steer they raised from calves. I was staying with my Aunt and Uncle while the steers were growing up. I just loved them. But they “went to McDonalds.”

What happened to her left ear? It looks as if a child had taken their scissors to it.

It is a way that some farmers use to designate their own cattle. The new ear tag system should be used but some of the older farmers still notch an ear when they are calves.
There are special tools for the job to notch ears

That looks like a really big notch, though.

It does but was small when they were a calf no doubt

๐ฎ Yar, well, no fine.

No I dislike that practice as well. The guidelines now are more tougher but in the bush no one is going to know if the cutters are disinfected between each notch or an anesthetic is applied

I wouldn’t want to tangle with those horns, even if they’re not as pointy as they might have been.
