What is this critter? He sure is cute, but those claws look like they could do some damage!

It is a Tasmanian Devil. The claws are sharp but the bite is worse. They can chew through a bone. But still are cute little dudes 🙂

They are such strange looking animals (even when they are not lying on their back playing dead!). Do you know how their populations doing now Brian?

They are a very different looking animal. They lumber about which looks funny for such a small animal.
This is the latest I could find. There are also captive breeding places on the mainland to reduce the chance of tumours.

Okay, that makes more sense. I didn’t think they were hanging around backyards. I guess this is one of those rare times when natural selection seems to be at work rather than man. But their loss is major for the region as they were the premier predator and there isn’t anything to take its place. I hope they find a vaccine that works!
