Photo a Week: Christmas

Due to my current situation, as my cousin put it, being a Neuro-prisoner and not being able to get out and shop apart from a quick trip to town on weekends with my daughter to do grocery shopping, my Christmas has been put on hold. Sure I’ll get together with my besties and my family but no presents this year and totally uninspired to even make presents as I would have done in the past.

Speaking of the past, here’s a journey into previous Christmases

  1. Brian, loved your fun images and understand your putting safety first this holiday. We are the same. I did buy gifts (online of course) for the little ones in our family but that was it for this year. It will be good to put 2020 behind us as 2021 holds some promise of a return to a more normal life – at least we HOPE so! Wishing you all the best as we close the door 0n 2020

  2. I don’t know that a peaceful Algarve morning is ready for 6 White Boomers, but it did make me smile, in spite of myself. We’re playing a game of cro4uet, wearing silly hats, in memory of Terje this morning. A final tribute, although I’m sure he’ll be with us every time we play in future. A subdued Christmas, Brian, but 2021 is another year. Sending Christmas hugs! 🙂 🙂

      1. It was cancelled, Brian. His widow couldn’t face getting out of bed. She was really brave and held it together at the church but it’s hit her now. 4 of us went for a walk in the saltpans and lunch afterwards. How lucky are we!

  3. Love the Australian Christmas song. Living in Southern Africa for quite a few years, I am used to Europeans moaning about the missing Christmas feeling because they think of snow in dark woods, Christmas markets, glühwein against arctic temperatures, candle light … I always enjoyed southern hemisphere Christmas atmosphere, I love a good Christmas braai ( = South African version of a barbie) and the kids jumping in the pool on Christmas morning and all that. It just is a different Christmas atmosphere. What I didn’t like was the attempt of a pseudo European Christmas with people sitting in front of foods that were made for winter and a completely artificial feel. I did like my husband sweating in his Santa costume in Zimbabwe, though. He arrived not in a sleigh but a fire engine! I hope you make the best of the coming days!

    1. Yes I am also find the European idea of Christmas, snow and all that a bit foreign. As a kid we had a mix of the traditional lunch with the hot Summers day alternatives. Santa arriving on a fire engine is so southern hemisphere 🙂 Have a lovely time

  5. Your post made me think of Dr. Seuss, “It came without ribbons, it came without tags. It came without packages, boxes, or bags … Maybe Christmas he thought doesn’t come from a store, maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more.” Maybe this is the year to bring all that back into perspective… Your picture of the plant with the lights reminds me of the first few years with Larry, we always decorated a potted palm just like that for our Christmas tree.

  6. Taking things safe here too, Brian. Love your angel. We will be 6 persons for Christmas, but all totally uninspired…We have made some presents, but not at all as we used to do. Hopefully we will play games and listen to music, walk the dogs and eat good food still. We are lucky to be together.
    All the best to you and yours – hoping 2021 will bring new inspiration and life to us!

  12. At first the photos drew me in , especially the second from top and the second from bottom. … Then the comments with varying tones of loss, melancholy, and stoicism kept me reading. A journey of Christmases is how I view my Decembers. From childhood in dry Southern California to young adulthood in wet Northern California to senior status in the Central Sierra Nevada Mountains. In this strange 2020 year, I find myself meditating on the heart of the season rather than rushing through the usual trappings.

    1. It is so different isn’t it. That box contains the Christmas presents guarded by the Christmas mice, bears and others. It is a time for reflection. Happy you liked this post Donna 🥰😀
