Day ten of Becky’s Square Photo Challenge for October: Kindasquare
A few post ago Becky posted a bean slicer for by gone days as a “what do you think this is?” post. I said I was going to look to see if I could find anything that could go into the What The? category of kindasquares. Well I found this little gem after rejecting another strange find which I did work out and decided it rally wasn’t a thing to post.
So here is my What The? and no I have no idea what it is or what it was used for. The closest I have come is that is a maritime object.

Intriguing

It does remind of something I have seen in a museum, but for the life of me I don’t know what. I am guessing some kind of lamp

It looks like a binnacle cover. A cover that goes over the top of a ship’s magnetic compass on an exposed deck 😃 Generally on older sailing ships, but also does still exist on modern military vessels as a backup in case the gyrocompass fails. https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/antique-brass-binnacle-compass-cover-469824492

👍 We used to have to practice navigating using the mag compass in case of the gyro compass going down (happened twice on one ship, once when going into Plymouth, a very tight & twisty route). I think I’ve an image of that binnacle seared on my mind 😂

That looks kinda familiar, Brian. I’m sure I’ve seen one in a maritime museum 🙂 🙂

Diving helmet?

That was what I thought initially but it would be for a small head and had no swivel or any way to waterproof for diving. Good try thought Sue 🙂

So that really is an old-fashioned diving helmet. Cool. Haven’t seen one of them since maybe the movies of childhood.

No Marilyn it is a Binnacle. Our resident sailor, Jez, sent the answer to the puzzle 🙂
