Debbie’s quotation inspired image
“Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.”
Oscar Wilde

If anyone has encountered a Masked Lapwing, they will give you the truth. Come near my nest and look out. Trouble is Masked Lapwings, or Plovers as they are generally known, lay their eggs anywhere they want. I have seen nests in the middle of football fields or on the grass verge on the side of a road.

They will defend their right to be casual egg layers quite violently. They have spurs on their wings which can be quite nasty if attacked.
“casual egg layers” lol 🙂
what does “spurs” mean, something like “spikes”? they look quite interesting though with that yellow adornment I must say 🙂

Yes in a sense. The spurs are quite sharp projections on the wings. Can just see a small patch of yellow in the wing. They are like the spurs on a rooster.

Interesting facts! Can be dangerous, roosters itself can attack pretty badly 😐

Oh yes, they can leave a nasty gash

Interesting. They do a nice job camouflaging their eggs. I sure wouldn’t want that masked bandit chasing me! I wonder if Oscar would admit to needing to eat those words in our current masked societies? 😉

I wonder too Shelley. No when they are squawking and flapping put your running pants on and go 🙂

That is quite the face. Maybe it’s intended as a warning.

they are very vicious … how are you?

Only if you go near the nest. They make a lot of noise and if that doesn’t move you away they they’ll fly at you.
Doing OK at the moment. staying busy watching my burnt fences getting rebuilt at last. Hope you are OK. Still at roadrunner?

Sounds like a bird after my taste – ferocious, wild and free. 😁 And Oscar Wilde always nailed it perfectly. 😉
