Shattered

Laura’s manic Monday 3 Way Prompt: Shattered

The Green Glass Goblet
sat upon the shelf.
Luminous.
A present from afar.
Never touched by lips,
never held a liquid.
Just for looking at.
It wasn’t priceless
That Green Glass Goblet.
It was always there.
She always looked at
The Green Glass Goblet
One day, she thought,
I shall take it down
and take a drink.
“Life’s just a cocktail party on the street”
But not until Mother
had passed
for Mother forbade
anyone to touch
The Green Glass Goblet

It was a Summers day
when she laid Mother to rest.
Afterwards she came back
to the house
where she spent her life.
Looking after Mother
Looking after the tiny cottage
Looking at The Green Glass Goblet.
Sitting in the kitchen
she thought of the day,
she thought of Mother
and her insistence
that everything had a place.
“All this chitter-chatter, chitter-chatter, chitter-chatter ’bout
       Shmatta, shmatta, shmatta”
She thought of the Summer,
perspiration trickling down her back.
Going to the fridge
the cool bottle in her hand
she went to the cupboard
but her eyes went to
The Green Glass Goblet.

Is this the day?
Can I really do it?
What would Mother say?
  “Ah look at me….I’m shattered”
Perhaps I will have to wash
The never touched
Green Glass Goblet.
Drying her sweaty palms
on the pinafore that
Mother insist she wear,
“Look at me, I’m in tatters!  I’m a shattered”
a trembling hand reached
straining upwards
to the shelf
where upon sat
The Green Glass Goblet.

With her treasure
finally in her hands
she opened the bottle
Champagne
What better way
to drink
from the Green Glass Goblet
“Love and hope and sex and dreams”
The bubbly liquid
spilled from the bottle
into the Green Glass Goblet
Lifting it to her lips
she murmured
To Mother
At last
A drink from
The Green Glass Goblet
“Laughter, joy, and loneliness and sex and sex and sex and sex
Look at me, I’m in tatters
        I’m a shattered”
The Champagne
bubbled at the corners
of her mouth.
Running down her neck
onto that pinafore
Mother insisted she wear
in case of a situation
just like this.
Laughing
she let the Green Glass Goblet
slip from her fingers.
“Does it matter? (shattered)
      Does it matter?”
